Bonus: Hawksworth’s Coconut Soda Recipe

I can’t say it enough: I love Hawksworth’s coconut soda*, so much so that I ordered it twice during our stay – once as a take-out drink – and have been obsessed with recreating it ever since. The staff at Hawksworth was kind enough to provide the recipe for me to share with all of you. Hope you love it, too:

*I am at a loss for how to describe it other than “refreshing”. The allspice definitely gives it a chai tea vibe, but you can taste the lime/coconut, too. Speaking of allspice gomme (syrup), here’s a recipe from Epicurious. I couldn’t find any bottled allspice syrup for sale, though I tried. I think Morris Kitchen should to add it to their line!

ingredients (in case you’re squinting at the type)

over cracked ice in a Collins glass build:

1 oz. fresh lime juice

1/2 oz. allspice gomme (syrup)

top with coconut water

1/3 soda water

garnish with freshly grated lime rind

Week Forty-one: Snippets from Vancouver | Hawksworth Restaurant

Vancouver restaurant Hawksworth opened in June 2011 on the street level of the Rosewood Hotel Georgia. We stayed at the Hotel Georgia during our August vacation and were able to have lunch at chef David Hawksworth’s newest venture. (Had heard many good things about it and so was so happy to literally stumble across it as we explored the new hotel.) The food was great: my buddy and I will vouch for their excellent burgers, and I was equally wowed with the restaurant’s graphic design. Created by Lightroom, Hawksworth’s stationery and business cards are clean, and yet playfully denote food + dining. Elegant yet approachable. Perfect.

You can see more of my photos from our August lunch at my Flickr set, and check back later this morning for the recipe for my favorite drink at Hawksworth!

Never underestimate the impact of simple design. These little notes, from LA’s Paper & Type, fold to a mere 2 1/8″ x 3 1/2″. I love them. Sold in sets of five, with kraft envelopes.

Week Thirty-nine: Fall Books Roundup

fall 2011 book release round-up | simple pretty

It’s almost Pavlovian: the calendar turns to October and I start thinking holiday gifts. Books are among my favorite things to give and receive, and I make ample use of Amazon’s wish lists for friends and family. If you too are “making your lists” perhaps you’ll be tempted by some of my favorite books of the moment (not surprisingly, heavily weighted towards food and cooking):

  1. Martha’s Entertaining: A Year of Celebrations Probably the most anticipated title on this list, as it’s certain to be full of what Martha does best: beautiful parties with unparalleled attention to detail.
  2. Food Rules Michael Pollan’s 2009 release becomes the perfect gift book in 2011 with the addition of Maira Kalman’s quirkily winning illustrations.
  3. The Table Comes First: Family, France and the Meaning of Food Adam Gopnik is one of my favorite writers, so I’m looking forward to his take on today’s foodie culture.
  4. Top Pot Hand-Forged Doughnuts: Secrets and Recipes for the Home Baker Top Pot’s old-fashioned doughnuts are a (not so) secret vice of mine. This book will serve as a souvenir of our August visit to Seattle’s doughnut heaven. And who knows, maybe I’ll attempt a recipe or two!
  5. Miette: Recipes from San Francisco’s Most Charming Pastry Shop The title sums it up: Miette is unbelievably charming, and the sweets outrageously delicious. With sweetly scalloped pages, and plenty of photos to tempt, the book features a great range of Meg Ray’s recipes, including my favorite, the chocolate pot de crème.*
  6. Floating Worlds: The Letters of Edward Gorey and and Peter F. Neumeyer Floating Worlds chronicles letters between two book partners who became friends. Gorey’s envelopes are marvelously detailed works of art. Topping my Christmas list (if I can wait that long.)
  7. Taschen 4 Cities – 12 Vol. in Box Covering New York, London, Paris, and Berlin, each city separated into guides for  “hotels”, “restaurants”, and “shops”. Love that they’ve taken the design-oriented (and coffee-table sized) Taschen guide book concept and translated it into pocket-sized companions.
  8. Menus for Chez Panisse I’ve yet to eat at Chez Panisse, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, but in the meantime, I’ll happily pore over this collection of letterpress menus for the restaurant, designed by Patricia Curtan.

Happy reading, and long live books!  Feel free to add your favorites to the comments.

* Per the helpful comment from Stef (below) please note that the current edition of the Miette cookbook has several errors. They have been addressed through a pdf errata document from Chronicle Books. In addition, a corrected version of the book is to be released later this fall.
