The August issue of Food&Wine arrived on Monday, and as soon as I saw this photo I ripped out the page with the recipe for Mixed-Berry Spoon Cake. Because someday soon, I will have an oven (again). And when I do, this will be one of the first treats I bake. Unless I make the pound cake crisp.

One of my favorite features from the Summer 2008 issue of Weddings is the Tree Astrology chart. My birthday falls under “Elm”, and I tend to agree with the description (Noble-minded and tasteful clothes? of course! Tends not to forgive mistakes? Ouch. That also can be true.) It does give the newly-planted elm tree in our front yard a special meaning. Download the chart here (pdf) and see what you are, and what you should have been. I’d like to incorporate a little beech tree into my life.

Welcome back! I spent a good chunk of my week away from the blog clearing out “stuff”. (How is it that I can do this so frequently, yet not seem to get anywhere?) It felt good to make progress, however small. I plan to devote a little time each day this week to this task as well. It’s supposed to be hot (near 90) and I still need to be home due to the ongoing kitchen work.
