Weekend wrap and a new blog to share

I am giddy with anticipation for this week’s weather forecast. Sunny and 70s all week. Hello, outdoors. If nothing else, I will finish a few more chapters of my latest book while sitting on the patio ….

The weekend was busy with ten-year-old sports on Saturday (baseball win 14-13; soccer win 2-1). The soccer game was close enough to my favorite take-out (Moveable Feast) that we stopped by for some renovation sustenance. Sunday/Father’s Day was spent with chores, including running (yes, sometimes it is a chore), laundry, and yard work. At night we met up with the in-laws to celebrate Father’s Day. All in all, a nice weekend. And now it’s Monday – lots of work going on in the kitchen today. Hopefully, the cabinets will all be up, the drywall repaired, and countertops measured. We passed the plumbing inspection, which was good enough to proceed with all of the above. Hooray. With the cabinets up, it will feel that much closer to completion.

Late last week, I discovered another great new blog, and immediately subscribed at google reader. Broadway Paper is blogging! Written by Tracie, the owner, it’s a nice glimpse behind the scenes, both in-store and at home. BP is one of my all-time fav paper stores.

See you tomorrow!

I’ve updated last week’s post with the link for the red, white, and blue star cookies!

my favorite and yes, it’s because of the lovely skirt color

Vera Wang’s Resort collection is so, so wearable (and looks so comfortable) that I had to share a few pictures with you. There are more pretty things, including a few coats (see look #17)! Check it all out at style.com.

Week Three Update and the Five

lasalle street kitchen renovation, week three | simple pretty

Week three is complete! Not much looks different in this photo, but the water pipes have been relocated. Today, say a little prayer to the inspection gods, because if we pass the rough inspection, then it’s time for drywall repair (where the ladder is) and the rest of the cabinets go in.

The Five is inspired by Martha (of Uniform Studio)’s still life group at Flickr. So many people contributed great still life photos this week. Among the many I liked are the Five:

  1. Bubbles
  2. tuesday still
  3. coil
  4. humble clover
  5. again

Be sure to check out the rest of the s t i l l photos at flickr.com/groups/s_t_i_l_l/. Thanks, Martha for organizing the visual treats!

Have a great weekend, all. See you Monday. Hopefully, with more drywall ….

More Martha

Lots going on at the house Wednesday morning: we had a new (Triumph elm) tree planted, a little construction/insulation work, appliance installation preliminary visit to check measurements, as well as some yard work (more pruning). All finished by 10 am. So, I ended up making an appointment for the Reese haircut at 11 am. I’m adjusting to having real bangs again, but I like the cut overall. No pictures yet!

I also tried to make a dent in the magazine pile. Martha’s July issue arrived on Monday, and it’s all about entertaining. As you would expect chez Martha, there were lots of good ideas. I got out the scissors to clip and save my favorites. One cute, easy and practical idea was to use a ribbon to tie a bottle opener to the handle of a tub filled with beverages. Another was to infuse simple syrups with flavors like orange or ginger or mint to use in cocktails. Just boil one cup of water + one cup of sugar, add flavoring, and steep for 30 minutes. Strain, chill and serve. But my favorite thing from the issue was the back page’s cookie of the month: red, white, and blue star cookies. Yummy sugar sandwich cookies with blueberry and raspberry jam baked in. No recipe online yet at marthastewart.com, but just as soon as it’s up, I’ll post the link. Martha Stewart Living’s July issue should be on stands starting this weekend.

If that wasn’t enough, Martha also announced today at her blog that iTunes will now carry video segments (under podcasts). The current themes are Father’s Day and July 4th. I downloaded “star shortcakes” to watch later.
