Boon Design (My favorite of the bunch. Simple, with bold color. Perfect!)

Did I mention that I’m not going to the Stationery Show this year (yet again – for the not going and the mentioning)? Thank goodness for New York magazine. Their Shop-A-Matic feature, where you can click through photos of everything from wallets to lipstick to shoes just recently added wedding stationery. While I don’t need any wedding stationery, it’s still a great way to see the work of a wide range of designers. I had fun picking out my favorites as I scrolled through the pages of stationery! In a way, it was like a mini online stationery show in the comfort of my house. My current loves are featured here. You can visit nymag.com to see all of the paper loveliness and confirm (or disagree with) my choices.

And finally, remember when I blogged about Minted a few weeks back with their save-the-date challenge? The entries are in, and now it’s time to vote! Check out the finalists and cast your ballot.

See you tomorrow …..

Drops in the bucket

We are (potentially) just a few weeks away from starting our kitchen remodel. As anxiety producing as that fact is for me, I am also seeing signs that it is “time”. Like the fact that our current kitchen faucet died on Friday. We have it on life support right now (can it last three weeks?), but it’s not like it used to be. For example, it can only be turned on (and off) when the handle is on the right. Plus, it leaks. Nothing like curtailing the use of the kitchen faucet a little early to get you psyched for no kitchen at all.

Over the rainy Saturday, I packed up a couple of the cabinets, and realized how much stuff we own that never gets used. Which led to the “Goodwill” pile, which led to a reexamination of my closets. (Rainy days at my house lead to introspection and then a general freak out.) The giveaway pile grew, and grew. Then we packed it up, dropped it off, and I admired a now empty drawer in an armoire. Miles to go, though. I am not the best at letting go. All the sweaters above have made the cut.

Sunday was gorgeous and other than going for a nice morning run, I wasted the entire day. Beautiful spring days are made for that.

Back tomorrow with stationery news (or perhaps a bakery?) See you then.

Friday Flickr Five

Someday, I’m going to devote a post to how much fun it is to wait on hold with (enter company of your choice)’s customer service, after you hunt down a number through the web site, and then spend the first five minutes of your calling listening to how much easier this would be if you’d just leave them alone and handle (enter your issue here) online.

I guess someday is today.

On with the Five:

  1. chives
  2. Soft-boiled
  3. Cinnamon Sugar Beignets
  4. Cape May Warbler
  5. _DEM1625web

Hope your weekend is call center free. See you back here on Monday.

Oops! I forgot!  Chicago letterpress fans, this weekend is for you: Snow & Graham is holding a 10th anniversary warehouse sale on Saturday, May 3 from 9-1 at (surprise!) their warehouse (4201 North Ravenswood). Look forward to lots of goodies, but hit the atm before you go: the sale is cash only.

I am tired

nighthawks at art institute of chicago | simple pretty

I spent most of Wednesday on a field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago with my son’s 4th grade class. Between navigating the drive (all roads under construction, of course) and making sure all students, teachers and parent volunteers were present and accounted for (another mom and I co-chaired the program) I’m just a little tired right now. Oh, and the tour? It was fabulous! We were led by AIC docents, and Peter, who was assigned to my son’s group, was the perfect guide. He had the group of 16 10-year-olds eating out of his hand within a minute.

See you tomorrow with the Five. But before I go, 1. Happy May Day! and 2. If you love Ira Glass and This American Life, tonight is the night they’re broadcasting live to a group of theatres across the country. I’m going. You can check to see if a theatre near you still has seats available.

photo above is of Nighthawks, my son’s favorite work at the Art Institute.

Miscellanea from ’round the web

blossoms | simple pretty

Hello, Wednesday! I’m a bit scattered today, so it’s a good time to feature more random goodness I’ve stumbled across while online:

  • Design*Sponge posted an Indianapolis design guide on Tuesday. Even though Chicago is only 3 hours away, I’ve never been. Now, after reading about French Pharmacie, Houseworks, and Patachou, I have to go check it out. A July road trip may be in order.(I’m being realistic: it’ll never happen during soccer season.) Read the rest of the guide online.
  • Loving Isaac’s web-i-sodes. Make sure to watch “elegance and honesty”. update: “how to have fun at a party” is my new favorite. I hope his new book (coming in October) is good.
  • If I were hosting a child’s birthday party, I would totally be ordering this invite from Story by Mia.
  • New pottery obsession? That would be Mae Mougin. Pricey but gorgeous.
  • And I’m thinking I need this to store my iPhone in. I’m ready to switch to a cell-phone-pocket free bag. Orange or pink for the tag?

Maria is updating her shop at noon et with some new and lovely items. Check it out!

Goodbye, April. See you back here in May.
