Laura Stoddart

laura stoddart 'all for love' book | simple pretty

If you are looking for a last-minute Valentine’s Day present, this is not for you (shipping is currently 3-6 weeks at amazon.com). No matter – I still want this book! Laura Stoddart is one of my favorite illustrators. She illustrates the packaging for Crabtree & Evelyn’s Gardeners line, and used to illustrate the Kate Spade Paper line. I have two Kate Spade Paper catalogs that I treasure – they are more like little books than catalogs! Stoddart’s oddly-proportioned people fill me with delight. I love the clothing she draws for her contemporary figures, as it’s very similar to my virtual-life aspirations – lots of cute skirts and sweaters! Okay, that’s a lot of exclamation points. I am going to hunt for this book in some gifty shops, and if I can’t track it down, I’m placing an order. Are you with me?

Trophy Cupcakes

Another snowy Monday ’round these parts – February must be the new January. At least it’s somewhat warm – and yes, I now consider 27 degrees to be a heat wave!

This week’s Bakery Monday feature is a brand-new bakery in Seattle: Trophy Cupcakes & Party. Here’s why I would love to visit Trophy – not only do they feature around ten flavors of cupcakes each day, but they also sell cards from Egg Press, as well as vintage cake toppers and other party accoutrements. The website is currently in progress, but you can take a peek here. For photos of the shop and its goodies, check out these pics at Flickr: From Seattle’s Trophy Cupcakes and Trophy (kind of blurry, but gives you a good glimpse of the interior).

For another kind of treat (lo-cal!), visit the New Yorker’s site and read this week’s piece by David Sedaris: “The Way We Are”. Guaranteed to be good.

Friday Flickr Five

Warning: today’s post has nothing to do with fall fashion! It is Friday, after all, and therefore the five are as follows:

  1. milky I think this would make a gorgeous watercolor painting
  2. Visual Diary: September 23, 2005 about being lonely, yet lovely sketching
  3. leftovers of happiness oh, the colors!
  4. blackberry jam the blue hue of the mug got me ….
  5. purse factory I am currently obsessed with the sketching + crafting of Ms. Bugheart, and once again, the colors drew me in.

Okay, I can’t hold it in any longer – I’m bursting – yesterday’s Calvin Klein and Vera Wang shows were sooo good!  In my old age, I am becoming a fashion minimalist. Goodbye, Lilly Pulitzer; Hello Prada – and the Calvin Klein show was full of simple yet gorgeous design. Vera Wang had splashes of  color to entice me: mustardy yellowy browns. Check them out! Today is the final day of shows in New York, and so next week, it’s back to when-will-it-be-spring. Have a great weekend!

Once more, please!

I’ve been looking at slideshows of fall fashion again this morning, and so far, no hearts! Most of what I saw seemed somber and dark. I did enjoy Peter Som’s collection (three looks pictured). Interesting splashes of color – check out thte green skirt and orange shoes! The outfit on the left looks like it would be fun to wear for a day of shopping in my fantasy life ….

Also, yesterday Maria clued me in to a new source of fashion week delight: The Sartorialist at the Shows. What I like about this photo blog is the variety of people featured. Some great shots of “everyday” show goers. Enjoy, and thank you, Maria! It’s added to the fashion week fun for me.

I had planned to talk about other things today, but then I saw the Behnaz Sarafpour and Narciso Rodriguez collections! As I mentioned yesterday, I am keeping a running log of the looks I like – and if they’re really good (because the list gets long) they get a heart. All three above got hearts today. Gorgeous, wearable, and fun! I have a thing for black skirts with a little crazy to them, as some of you already know.

Also, here’s one more website as you scan the collections: WWD’s Fashion On Site. Another option for your daily fashion fix. Don’t worry, fashion week ends on Friday.
