“Shopping” the Fall Collections

Yesterday was a big day at the fall shows – and there’s a lot to look at online! May I suggest you visit New York Magazine’s website? It’s the first place I go to check out the slideshows – no ads like Style.com (though I still check there, too, some designer’s recaps are only available there) and there is video for selected shows. Video gives you a better idea of how the dresses really look. Today’s new slideshows include Carolina Herrera, Isaac Mizrahi, Marc Jacobs, Luca Luca, Marchesa, and Oscar de la Renta, among others. (There were a lot of shows yesterday.) The big winner for me was Oscar de la Renta’s collection. There were seven items that I fell for on the first scroll-through. Curious as to what I picked? Check out looks 5, 13, 27 (huge love!), 35, 36, 38, and 39 at nymag.com. Just classic and gorgeous and you could wear them forever. And yes, I loved Isaac’s show too. Check all of the fashion shows at the New York Magazine fashion page. There’s lots more to see at the site – how much time do you have?

Today Narciso shows – can’t wait!

Miette Patisserie and Confiserie

miette confiserie, sf | simple pretty

It was Nine Below Zero this morning! When it gets this cold, I always start wondering why we haven’t moved to a warmer climate, and then I start wondering where we should be living. San Francisco, outrageous housing prices notwithstanding, is always appealing to me. Great weather: I love the idea of a cold August and a warm October. Plus, it’s home to so many wonderfully creative people and unique shops. Miette Patisserie would be one of my favorites for sure. The patisserie is located in the Ferry Building Marketplace – their list of cakes sounds fabulous and looks, well, perfect! To top it off, Miette recently opened a Confiserie in the Hayes Valley. The picture above is from the confiserie – doesn’t it look enticing?  I could spend a lot of time at that shop picking out my favorite sweets. Best of all, there is a shop-by-mail feature at Miette’s website, where you can order macarons, cookies, candy, and more! So you don’t have to relocate to enjoy Miette. (I still need to escape this weather, though, and soon ….)

And by the way, Prince rocked the Superbowl halftime show! I need to go to Las Vegas to see it show. It would be warm!

Friday Groundhog Flickr Five

Things are starting to go my way. At 5:15 pm yesterday, after waiting from 10:30 until 5 for my new Capresso, it finally arrived! (okay, some would say that waiting almost 7 hours for a coffee maker is not the definition of things going one’s way, but I’m trying for optimism here – work with me!) Second, my sweet friend R has ordered up a copy of Milk, the French parenting magazine that both MAV and Simply Photo have been raving about this week, so I’ll soon have my very own copy here in suburbia! There is a trend, folks! On to a bone-chillingly-cold weekend, and the Five:

  1. snow!
  2. curly
  3. shop update today
  4. paris … breakfast
  5. green & yellow & blue

I didn’t add comments this week to the photos: thought it would be interesting to let you see how these five speak to you, without having my voice to compete ….

Stay warm + see you Monday! Fashion week begins today: I’m eagerly awaiting the coverage in the NYTimes and on the web.

Got card?

figment design valentine's card | simple pretty

Have you started your Valentine’s Day card-shopping yet? Valentine’s Day has some of the cutest cards, in my opinion. For example, how about the “struck/struck down” card featured above? Love those sweet cupids! It’s by Jonathan Wright; available at Figment’s Design in Providence, RI. Ultra-cute, and totally my style. Figments also has other Valentine’s cards, including some beautiful options from Bernard Maisner, and gorgeous letterpressed works from Sesame Letterpress. (Check out the “True Love” card. Wow!) Figments’ list of designers is quite impressive: if I were a local, I’d be there often, and my wallet would be much lighter. Check out all of Figments’ Valentine’s Day offerings here.

Squid Soap

squid soap | simple pretty

It’s cold and flu season, and we’ve had at least one person sick with a cold here since Christmas, with no immediate end in sight. I have my son wash his hands as soon as he gets home from school, but I do not supervise (most days), and I suspect there are many times that it’s a less than ideal job. Therefore, I deem Squid Soap genius product of winter! As you press on the soap dispenser, an ink dispenser leaves a small orange dot on your skin. To get rid of it, simply wash your hands for 15-20 seconds. By the way, the soap is regular soap, not anti-bacterial. Hooray! You can find Squid Soap at many Walmarts, or at the Squid Soap website.
