Week Five: Lulu Powers

I don’t know about you, but with the winter weather we’ve been having, I am more than ready for spring and summer and all things outdoors again. While I wait, I find myself picking up Lulu Powers‘ cookbook, Food to Flowers, over and over and dreaming about the parties I wish I were at! It’s full of gorgeous photography, and the parties are thoughtfully grouped by time of day. Her Independence Day Celebration looks especially fun: perhaps it’s the best margarita recipe ever that drew me in. (When will margarita season be back?) In addition to the book, you can find oodles of tips from Lulu, including a blog, recipes, and party playlist suggestions, at her website.

January Flickr Faves

One of the things that gets missed with weekly posting is my Friday Flickr Five. I’m still as avid a Flickr user as ever and I’d like to share some favorites with you on a monthly basis. The snowpocalypse distracted me this week, so better late than never, here are some January Flickr Faves:

  1. Port Stanley 090

Have a lovely weekend (and if you’re extra lucky, may it be snow free.)

Coziness from Cacharel’s pre-fall collection. The top half would be perfect to wear today: it’s a balmy 7 degrees. See the full Cacharel show at Style.com.

Snow Day Bonus: The BEST Chocolate Chip Cookies

the best chocolate-chip cookies | simple pretty

Chicago is digging out from Snowpocalypse 2011. And to me, snow days mean baking, so I dug out a favorite recipe for chocolate chip cookies. I hereby declare them the best ever. (I think it’s the oatmeal.) Give it a try and see if you don’t agree:

Chocolate Chip Cookies (can be doubled)

1 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

2 cups flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

2 cups blended oatmeal

1 tsp vanilla

12 oz chocolate chips*

1.  Measure oatmeal, and blend in a blender to a fine powder.

2.  Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix together with oatmeal. Combine flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Add chocolate chips.

3. Roll into balls (I used an ice cream scoop) and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet.

4.  Bake at 375 F for 9-10 minutes.

Notes: I didn’t have 12 oz of chips (more like 5) so I combined that with guittard discs from my pantry, and a few handfuls of m&m’s. Completely unscientifically measured. I also baked for longer than the time specified, but I suspect my oven needs to be re-calibrated.

Enjoy!

Sending valentines is so much fun (and receiving even better!) I simply adore these personalized photo valentines from Pinhole Press. At 3.5″ by 4″ (no envelope as they’re meant to be handed out) the design is appealing to adults yet feels kid-appropriate, and lastly, I have to admit that I love that bubble gum bubble! See more of Pinhole’s classic + clean options for your celebration right here, and enter “freeshipping” for free ground shipping on orders through February 7.
