Making a list

Mondays are made for overachieving. It’s like a mini do-over each week. Revisiting resolutions, making lists (oh, am I good at that). So I set out with a lengthy list of to-dos, and I am proud to say I got through them all, including finishing an actual book! Non-fiction, of course: Public Radio, Behind the Voices. I bought it during our February trip to San Francisco at Book Passage in the Ferry Building for the bargain price of $5.98. It was sitting on a table, calling out to me. I highly recommend it if you’re the least bit curious about the stories behind the voices.

I also worked on getting the kitchen packed up and ready to move out of. It’s odd, the things you find in kitchen cabinets. Stuff you remember buying, and have never used, or mementos from college (plastic drink cups, anyone?) that you have no need for but cling to, or even say, unused wedding presents (I’m talking to you, fondue set). I found a tube of lipstick in the cabinets above the refrigerator! Packing, and having to look at our possessions is another reminder to pare down and get rid of the clutter.

Speaking of clutter, bottle reduction 2008 could be the best year yet. Despite what you might think after looking at the photo above (lots and lots of Bobbi Brown), I’m getting pretty close to just the “essentials” in haircare, skincare, and cosmetics. Now, I just have to stay strong, and ignore the latest Sephora catalog, which of course, arrived on Monday.

Tomorrow we’ll talk stationery. See you then.

Cold Sunday; Traffic Woes; S’mores on the Brain

Still waiting on some warm spring weather …. at least the sun is nice and cheery! The photo above was taken close to 6am on Sunday. (Yes, I was up.) The sun was streaming in all of the windows on the front of the house, and I quickly grabbed my camera and started taking pictures. None were ideal upon uploading, but this was close.

Traffic prevented us from going into the city on Sunday. My son vetoed the potential 90 minute + drive, and truth be told, the thought of it didn’t do much for me, either. So we ran errands at a local mall instead.

Saturday morning, I was surfing the internets, and found this project for a table top s’mores grill at ohdeedoh (part of Apartment Therapy, a site I need to spend more time at). I must have s’mores on the brain, because after flipping through the Summertime Anytime cookbook last week, I was immediately drawn to the indoor s’mores recipe. Have to make it soon, and it’s simple. (I know, s’mores weren’t exactly challenging before, but these looked so good!) Assemble the marshmallow/graham part of the s’mores as usual, but dip in melted chocolate. Heavenly. And with the weather still more like March/April, an outdoor fire pit would be the perfect excuse to roast marshmallows.

See you tomorrow. Hopefully, with stationery info.

Friday Flickr Five

It’s been a cool spring, but with the lilacs in their full glory, there’s no denying the season. I love stepping out the back door right now, because ever so lightly, you can smell the soil, the sun, and yes, even the lilacs ….

On with the Five:

  1. Lighthouse
  2. Tampopo
  3. …the setting…
  4. Ice Cream Colours
  5. Huge Fossil Oyster..

Hope that your weekend is lovely. I’m hoping to get enough kitchen packing completed that we can head into the city Sunday for a bit of fun. (shopping? cupcakes?)

Finally, I’d like to share a quote from Thursday’s crossword: “The more you love music, the more music you love.” ~Abram Chasins

See you on Monday.

I am gearing up for an overload of stationery information next week. I can’t wait to see all of the “new new new”. This and fashion week pretty much work me into a frenzy. And truth be told, since I’ll be sitting at my laptop in Chicago, my plan is to rely on Grace at Design*Sponge to curate and pass along the scoops from her visit. She’s already highlighted a couple of designers in her stationery show “pregame” that I’m eager to see more from. One is Mateo Ilasco. (Read Grace’s post here.) As a math geek, I am smitten with the numbers stationery pictured above (and I suspect that my son will be as well. That’s right, I’m hoping to buy this asap.) The website seems to hint at a numbers theme, so I’m hoping there’s even more like this to love. For those of you attending the show, check out booth 1448 for more.

The second is Alee & Press, a new letterpress design studio. After reading Grace’s post, I immediately clicked over to the website to look through the baby and wedding portfolios. Love their style; especially the “vintage” wedding invitations as well as the “animal” and “sweet pea” baby announcements. And of course, I bookmarked the site because I’m clearly going back to see what else they feature after the full site launches. Booth 1254 for you lucky ducks.

Finally, I’m loving the new joint venture between Rebecca from Moontree Letterpress and Breck at Sesame Letterpress. (I’ve ordered from both in the past and love their work, in case you were wondering!) Brooklyn Social Cards is an easy way to get yourself some utterly cool letterpressed business/social cards. There are 16 sample styles in the catalog (pdf download) you can look through; then it’s three easy steps and voila! Check it out and see if you don’t agree.

Back tomorrow with the Five.

Denial and decorating and design

iris flowers | simple pretty

Hello, Wednesday! Two weeks from today, I will have no kitchen. I’m in total denial about that little fact, so I’m repeating it to myself as often as I can.

My husband has returned from NYC with June Vogue, as well as some treats from Bouchon. I only wish his company’s annual meeting could be the same week as the Stationery Show. Or maybe not. That would be a tall order to fill.

(“Could you just stop by all of the cute booths and report back, please?”)

As for Chicago, I’m excited to learn that Domino magazine is hosting Domino Design District the weekend of June 7 and 8 in Lincoln Park. Over 30 stores are participating, and there will be shopping discounts (!) as well as events. Better yet, as of this writing, there are no soccer games scheduled for that weekend. So I think I’m cleared to attend! Hooray! I’m hoping to pick up a few more decorating ideas as I walk along Armitage. I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve never been to Jayson Home & Garden. This could be the weekend to end that drought. And as the kitchen will be torn up, eating out will work for me, too. Keep checking back at the site for more information as it still seems to be in process. See you there!
