I’ve finished my dissection of the Fall 2007 Martha Stewart Weddings. My strategy is to rip out anything worth saving, along with the corresponding source pages, and as usual, there was much to love, even if you are not getting married anytime soon. The featured weddings are so beautifully done, and gorgeously photographed, that it’s just a treat to celebrate vicariously. I would save the whole issue if I could, but you would find me buried under a stack of paper in under a year’s time. So, I rip.
My favoritest thing from the fall issue is the labels pictured above. To me, they evoke Paper + Cup, which is high praise. Simple, and elegant, and perfect for a wedding invitation, but also great on any envelope! Those of you on my Christmas card list will no doubt be seeing them this year. However, while testing out the template (downloads as an Acrobat Reader file), I cannot get the return address section to accept my entry. Anyone else experiencing this problem? Oh, I hope it is not a “mac” thing.And speaking of Paper + Cup, check out Emily’s blog about their new Communique line. Those cc:me pads (available at See Jane Work) are awesome, but I want to see all of it first. And preferably, touch it, too. So, I wait.

It’s quite foggy this morning. Naturally, I went outside in my “loungewear” (pajamas) to try to capture it. This was the best of five attempts. I was hoping to photograph a cute bunny sitting in our front yard, but he had other ideas. Oh well. Mornings like this scream fall to me. Cool, damp, quiet ……As for yesterday, the haircut isn’t that much different than before. Surprise, surprise. I talk a good game. Even brought in photos to describe my radical change. I’ll take a photo in a couple of days and share it here, after I’ve styled it myself and all. My hair always looks different when I’m in charge of it.And now, for the awkward segue. I am a graphic design nut. By which I mean, although I have no background in art (accounting major? what was up with that??), I think about it a lot. I look forward to HOW and Print magazines’ design annuals: it’s kind of like collecting a bunch of cool business cards (yep, I do that too) all at once. Plus packaging, invitations, you name it, and I can store it on the shelf! Confession: I used to save shopping bags as well. Funny how now I will go to absurd lengths to not get a shopping bag! Anyway, back to my graphic design obsession, and today’s entry into my personal, running design annual. Eat is a breakfast/sandwich shop which started in London over ten years ago. I have never been, so I cannot in any way vouch for the food, but the website and packaging are gorgeous, and their menu looks yummy. My kind of food. My kind of design. Click through their site and see what you think.
and by the way, credit for Eat’s design goes to Pentagram – they discuss the redesign at their blog.

It’s hard to believe the calendar when we had another very summery weekend in these parts. Filled with errands, but the weather was summery. Yesterday, I picked up a couple of Blue Moon pumpkins (for a steal!), some Black Mission figs (I haven’t had figs in eons and they’re everywhere), and planted a boxwood to fill out around the patio – okay, that was my husband, not me. We even got in a family bike ride yesterday, taking a path I had not been on before, which was nice.I’m still trying to cut back on the baked goods (due to last week’s New York magazine article – and no, I still don’t have my copy). But on Friday, another new bakery tempted me. Scones! Muffins! Coffee! Heaven on Main Street is run by fashion model Taylor Foster and her photographer husband. The food at Heaven is vegetarian and organic, and the place looks oh so cute. (I think it’s open only on weekends.) And, it really won’t affect my diet. It’s in Bovina Center, New York. Read the NYTimes article, complete with color photos that will make you want to visit, here.
Two more things to tell you about for October 1: Design*Sponge moves to its new web home starting at 10am. Also, Maria of Port2Port is updating her web store (also at a new location) with her fall series of cards. Can’t wait to see it!
As for me, today I’m off for a haircut. Will I try something new? I’m thinking about it, but I’m prone to chickening out. Stay tuned …..

I love fall. The light, the colors. So many great pictures to favorite; so little time.Here are the Five:
- sunny yellow
- pyracanthus
- ::
- catching my breath
- Left over from the rain
There were so many great photos this week that these five are just scratching the surface. Spend a little time on Flickr looking at the lovely colors of fall. Or better yet, go outside and experience it …..See you Monday!
I have to add that if you’re in or near Brooklyn today or tomorrow, Sesame Letterpress and Moontree Letterpress are having sample sales from 11-5. Samples. Sounds great! Find some for me! (Early Christmas shopping, perhaps?)

Okay, so I never got around to taking a nap, but since I am not above going to bed at 8pm, I feel “caught up”. Fueled by Starbucks, I managed to slog through yesterday’s routine.The high point was the UPS man delivering the book pictured above. Fact: I am obsessed with picture books. Always have been, and it’s kind of sad to me that my son is now “past” the picture book age, because that was a great justification for buying lots and lots. Each illustrator in Artist to Artist speaks about his/her art, how he/she got started, and some early artwork is showcased (loved the 500 pound robin colored by a 6-year-old Wendell Minor!), along with a self-portrait. The text is directed at children, but as someone who continually wishes that she could draw better, I found it inspiring, too. Some of my favorite picture book illustrators are featured (Jane Dyer, Tomie DePaola, Mitsumasa Anno), but I think I’ll be adding to the list of favorites as I delve further into the book.
All proceeds from the sale of Artist to Artist benefit the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. A road trip to Amherst, MA is going on my “things to do list” immediately. As well as a little online research on Allen Say, whose art is currently on exhibit. Oh, my. A quick scan of his books at Amazon tells me that I have a new obsession ….
