Back to winter

Yesterday’s snow is still around, and that’s not all bad, especially since I have the new Klehm’s Song Sparrow catalog to plan my spring garden acquisitions. Klehm’s has a wide selection of peonies, and you just can’t go wrong with peonies in a garden. Brief is their reign, but it’s a glorious one! I’m considering adding ‘the fawn’, ‘serene pastel’, or ‘susie q’ to my little patch of peonies. (any favorite?) We ordered wisteria from Klehm’s last year, and I can’t wait to see how far up the pergola it grows this summer.

Doesn’t the thought of flowers make the snow even more lovely? You can visit Klehm’s website at songsparrow.com.

Read, Watch, Listen

Looking for something to do this holiday Monday? Try the following:

  1. Do you have about two hours? I suggest you read Calvin Trillin’s lovely book, About Alice. Originally a piece for the New Yorker (in a shorter form), it speaks of Trillin’s love and adoration for his wife, Alice. Loved it.
  2. Only have 92 minutes? Watch Saved! Released in 2004, featured on Oxygen over the weekend (where I watched it again), this is definitely worth a spot in your Netflix queue. It’s a teenage movie fit for grownups.
  3. Really crunched for time? Then a song from Saved!, “Flowers in the Window” by Travis, is what I recommend. Only three minutes and 41 seconds of your time, not including the download time from iTunes.

Happy Monday! Oh, and if you find yourself with oodles of spare time tonight, may I suggest the voyeuristic delight knowon as the Golden Globes ….

Friday Flickr Five

The first week of blogging for 2007 really sped by. Can’t believe it’s already time for the Five! Here they are:

  1. dusk sky
  2. Lesbaby crab
  3. pine
  4. Mist..ère*
  5. Romance*

Did the last three get you in the mood for snow? Chicago is rumored to get another big snow on Sunday …. we’ll see …. at least there’s no school on Monday, so I’m ready. Have a great weekend!

Illustration Heaven

I’ve been sketching a lot this week – my new year’s version of going to the health club, I guess. One of the reasons I’ve felt so “sketchy” is the gorgeous illustrations at Tante Tini’s (tantetini.com) website. (discovery credit to Bloesem, via Design*Sponge) Tante Tini sells children’s shoes and boots, but I was smitten with the drawings of olaf, aldo, ralph, jacob xs …. okay, all of the hem. You can see the beauty here – the illustrations are under “collection”, which is the drawer with the “new” tag. (It’ll make sense once you visit.) Have a great Thursday: today is the first day the sunrise comes earlier since the solstice. Hooray for more light!

Nothing to Buy

emma bridgewater "love my car" mug | simple pretty

This could well be the month of frustrated shopping for me. I am all ready for spring, and “new” – don’t try to palm off that clearance item on me, missy! :) and yet, the items that are beckoning to me aren’t really available. Take the adorable mug above, from Emma Bridgewater. I need it! (sound familiar?) I’m guessing it will swim over to the States soon, but for now, it’s only a picture. Check out more of Emma Bridgewater’s lovely pottery at emmabridgewater.co.uk. And if your preferred car is a Beetle or a 70s Ford Capri, well, there are mugs for that, too.

By the way, delayed gratification on the iPhone is June, and the ultra-slim laptop? That was just a rumor (for now) ….
