Today’s NYTimes Arts section has an article about Aaron Sorkin and his new show, “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.” Bill Carter’s take is that the new show draws heavily from Sorkin’s own life (drug addiction, dating a devout Christian, getting fired from tv). Sorkin agrees that there are parallels, but that the series is not based on him. I am eager to see Sorkin’s return to television, since I adored “The West Wing” while he and Tommy Schlamme were in charge. I’ve seen the “Studio 60” pilot already, courtesy of Netflix. Loved it! Also loved his movies “A Few Good Men” and “The American President.” The man can write! And a great cast, to boot.
Speaking of writing, the new issue of the New Yorker has a David Sedaris piece, “In the Waiting Room: the Perils of Imperfect French”. Get ready to laugh! (sorry, it’s not available online)
Are you enjoying a last blast of summer weather (like Chicago is)? Skip right over fall and winter then, because today starts Fashion Week in NYC for Spring/Summer 2007. For the Friday Five, my five most anticipated shows:
1. Narciso Rodriguez Consistent vision, beautifully constructed clothes.
2. Carolina Herrera Beautiful dresses (love all the ribbons she’s been working into designs of late). And so elegant!
3. Oscar de la Renta Somehow, he makes over-the-top ornamentation look wearable.
4. Vera Wang I got married right before the cult of Vera Wang began, but love her wedding designs. I always check to see what she’s thinking for ready-to-wear.
5. Martin Grant LOVE his stuff. Elegant, yet minimal, and retro – all at the same time.
If you are tempted to check out some shows, my preferred sites are Style.com and New York Magazine. Have fun, and think spring! See you Monday.
More often than not, my “crazy” Google searches turn up something new – and fun – and unexpected. Such is the case with Cupcacoco Home. I was searching for Emma Bridgewater pottery, hoping that some US store had updated its inventory with the fall items (nope!), and stumbled across this store, based in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Yes, they carry some Emma Bridgewater, but I found myself drawn to the beautiful kitchen towels, as well as the French milk bottles. Check them out here, and see if you don’t find something that inspires you!
First – I just love Jennifer Murphy’s handwriting and illustrations! Second, her bears, ducks, elephants, and mice (to name a few) are quite cute as well. I learned about Jennifer and her bears when she was featured in Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion Magazine. Jennifer updated/relaunched her website yesterday and added lots of photos (love the ducks on the “shop” splash page) …. she also will be introducing a line of decorations through Midwest of Cannon Falls in 2007. I’m eager to see what that will be. In the meantime, the next site update (with new items for purchase) will be mid-October. Once the site is updated, they sell out quite quickly, so be warned! I’m still looking for an elephant to add to my collection, or perhaps a mouse or another duck. Congrats, Jennifer!
Had a busy but fun Labor Day weekend – four soccer games for my son, lots of meals with family and friends, and even some antique shopping/hunting. (I have a renewed resolve to find that florentine gilded mirror!) Anyway, over pizza on Saturday, I learned that Isaac Mizrahi has launched a new website: Isaac’s Style Book, where he features photos from his Bergdorf Goodman couture collection, as well as his Target line. Oh, how I want to see that couture collection in person! Check out his site – sign up for Isaac’s updates, and order a copy of the stylebook. (It’s free, and you can pick it up at selected locations in major cities, but I had to go for the guaranteed delivery – only $3.25.) Then, look over the rest of the site, and smile when you realize his Style network show is coming back for season two in October.
