All self-interest aside (more on that in a minute)*, if you like the new wave of indie magazines, I think you’ll love the new travel/food magazine Cereal. Based in the UK, the premiere issue (and website) launched December 3. Editor/founder Rosa Park should be quite proud of her accomplished début: it is not only gorgeously designed, but full of inspiring articles and photography. One of my favorite stories from the issue features a simple yet utterly charming carrot cake (excerpt below).
Hopefully, these preview photos give you a good idea of the magazine’s aesthetic. If you’re as eager to hold a copy in your hands as I am, Cereal is ready to purchase online and will be available at various international retail outlets: visit the website to find a US stockist.
*Self-interest disclosure: I am quite honored to be one of the contributors to the launch issue, with a story about Copenhagen’s Central Hotel & Café.

Though the world turns more digital every day, I still prefer print for finding inspiration. A few of the new lifestyle books I’m poring over this holiday are:
Edible Selby (Abrams, $35) Todd Selby’s latest book allows you to take a foodie tour of the world from the comfort of an armchair. (And at a fraction of the cost, though you’ll be left with a strong itch to head to the airport in search of a great meal.) Edible Selby is put together in the same format as his blog and NYTimes pieces, and offers an enticing combination of photos, sketches + interviews. St. John, Tartine Bakery, and Mistral are among the destinations receiving the Selby treament this go round, but fingers crossed there are plans for a Volume Two.
Elegantissima (Princeton Architectural Press, $40) Louise Fili’s graphic designs never fail to delight. A master of typography, Fili’s branding work lends old world styling a feel that is at the same time, very of-the-moment. This first monograph highlights some of my favorites from Fili’s portfolio, including Sarabeth’s Kitchen, The Bedford Post Inn, and The Mermaid Inn. (With a specialty in restaurants + food packaging, it’s no wonder that I’m smitten!)
English Decoration (Ryland, Peters & Small, $40) Renaissance man Ben Pentreath is not only an accomplished architect, he has an über-charming shop in London’s Bloomsbury neighborhood, filled with objets and curiosities for the home, and he still finds time to pen an “Inspiration” blog filled with personality, stories, and lots of glorious photos. Arranged by room type, English Decoration is a wonderful compilation of Pentreath’s decorating successes and a gives you an appreciation for the thoughtfulness he brings to his practice.
A Living Space (Rizzoli, $49.95) It must be said: I am crazy for the Kit Kemp aesthetic, which manages to project whimsy and elegance simultaneously. Not the easiest combination to pull off, and yet Kemp makes it look effortless. It is no surprise that I was eagerly anticipating her new book. Filled with photos from her Firmdale hotel properties in London and New York, as well as the Kemp’s home, A Living Space is certain to inspire more than a few decorating projects in the new year. (You can watch Kit Kemp personally introduce her new book at YouTube.)

Much as I am loving the warm (for December) weather we’re enjoying at the moment, I also know that it’s making me think I have much more time to prepare for Christmas than three weeks. So while I try to get organized + enact the plans I envisioned back when the holidays weren’t looming, enjoy some Flickr favorites from November:
Back on Wednesday …. here’s hoping I make a dent in the to-do list before then!
