Bits of electronic/technologic gratitude

Where would I be without my gadgetry, and my internet? So much to be thankful for. The gratitude starts with my iPod: Seriously, it could be the best invention ever. I love that I can change just one song on a playlist, and it livens up my three-times-a-week running habit. (I’m getting a little faster, so I like to say “running” instead of “jogging”. Optimism!) This week, I am ultra grateful for Feist’s “I Feel It All”. (links to the video – oh but now I think you should visit youtube to see her performance on the Jimmy Kimmel bus last May.) Her song makes the treadmill endurable, and makes me sprint when I’m outside. Thanks, Feist!

Speaking of things one can listen to, what about podcasts? I’ve heard some fabulous interviews with indie artists by Grace from Design*Sponge, never have to miss This American Life, and when Laura Bennett is interviewed by Blogging Project Runway, I can just click and listen. And French lessons! and concerts! (Seriously, I’m beginning to understand why Oscar winners drone on and on. You keep thinking of more things/people to thank.)

And then there’s the crazy goodness of the internet. My son is 10, and yet I have a curious fascination with the Bugaboo stroller. Thanks to this week’s New York magazine, available online, I can read all about the strollers I don’t have, and compare/contrast, and ponder what I would own if it were 1997 all over again. No embarrassing conversations in the stroller store. (“Are you pregnant?” “No, I just love the design of the Bugaboo, thanks.”) Not to mention that when I snap out of the stroller crazy, New York will be ready to feed my fall fashion craving starting this Friday. (They’re ready now with previews! Bonus!)

On an enormously grateful note, there are the tons and tons and oodles and oodles of bloggers/flickr-ers/etsy-ers who inspire me on a daily basis. I cannot mention them all, and will not even try to, because I fear leaving out a favorite someone unintentionally. The connectivity the internet provides is such a blessing to me. (The tv goes out, and I wait it out. The internet goes down, and I pace.) There are days that I’ll be feeling blue, and then I’ll read about someone who seems to love stationery, or Emma Bridgewater, or birds (don’t even get me started on how grateful I am for Flickr), or name my obsession here, just as much as I do. It’s a wonderful thing, being able to share your passion with others. It’s a bright light of individualism in the mall-ified world. I am so grateful for those of you out there who inspire me. Thank you.

I’ll see you tomorrow with more gratitude. As always, feel free to add your comments below.

Bits of gratitude

foodstuffs chocolate-chip scone | simple pretty

I worked myself into a good funk on Sunday. (Don’t ask.) So, my focus for the rest of the week will be to highlight things I’m grateful for in an attempt to deprogram myself.

Today, I am grateful for Foodstuff’s chocolate chip scones. (see photo above) So full of chocolate chips, and the large size is good for at least two breakfasts worth of deliciousness (if I can restrain myself). I have fun pretending to eat a good breakfast, but I know I’m not. It’s basically a triangular chocolate chip cookie. Goes so well with my cafe au lait, too. Foodstuffs is at the Mart now, too! Must go check it out.

I’m extremely grateful that the Archer typeface is now available for sale! (You may know it from Martha Stewart Living magazine.) I’ve been obsessing over its beauty forever, it seems. Now, I’m trying to decide which package to order. This news totally made my day. Thank you Hoefler & Frere-Jones.

The first season of This American Life, the tv show, comes out on dvd today, exclusively at Borders. Ira Glass will be at the Michigan Avenue (Chicago) Borders tonight at 7 pm for a signing. New Yorkers, he’s coming to the Borders at Columbus Circle Thursday at 7pm. I seriously love this man’s voice, and his show. Yep, definitely grateful for Ira Glass’ existence.

Bobbi Brown is going to be on QVC today. More gratitude. Love her makeup philosophy. I find QVC very relaxing (odd, I know). Sometimes I’ll set the bedroom tv to it with the sleep timer and fall asleep listening to people talking and shopping. I’ll be even more grateful when the writers’ strike ends, I think, as this QVC thing is a recent development.

Feeling better already. Stay tuned for more gratitude tomorrow. See you then.

What I’m Reading

design books | simple pretty

Christmas seems like ages ago. January ends this week. Time flies. But thankfully, I’m starting to feel a bit more organized, and on top of things. (Looking for wood to knock on.)

See all of the tabs peeking out of the books in the photo? That’s a sign that I really liked what I was reading, and want to go back and savor. I read about Today’s Top Stationery Artists when I was checking out the Good on Paper website to see what was new. I love that it’s full of photos of some of my favorite stationery artists: Snow & Graham, Paper + Cup, Egg Press, Fomato, and Good on Paper, of course. I’m definitely keeping it close at hand for reference.

The second book, Restaurant Graphics, was a birthday gift from my brother. Loving it, as one of the first examples is AvroKO’s work for Public in New York. (Cool, huh? Fab library/retro feel. A Public Wine Mailbox would be fun to have. Perhaps I should eat there first, though. As usual, getting ahead of myself.) I’ve been anticipating AvroKO’s own design book forever. (The publication date keeps getting pushed back. Hopefully, February 19 will be the real deal.) Then, to top it off, there’s a section dealing with the Butcher Shop, and B&G Oysters, two of Barbara Lynch’s Boston restaurants whose identity I’ve been known to obsess over.

Any books you’d like to recommend for tabbing? See you tomorrow.

Giveaway #3: Fresh Lip Shine

Hello, readers! This week’s giveaway is a brand new, never opened Fresh Lip Shine in “Daphne”. The color is a pretty sheer your-lips-but-better muted red. (I did just open the box to confirm the color description.) I got this from the Fresh store in Boston in December (and I have two more tubes; hence the giveaway), so it’s pretty new on many levels.

Interested? Leave a comment at this post by 11:59 pm on Monday,  January 28. I’ll draw one name and post the winner in Wednesday’s blog post. Good luck!

Friday Flickr Five

This week has flown by. I’m so ready for it to warm up over the weekend – I’ve had enough below zero to last for a while. Makes for creative photo taking, though. I took the picture above through my son’s bedroom window.

On with the Five:

  1. untitled
  2. honesty
  3. untitled
  4. Cute Little Guy
  5. Tilt your head to the left please.

Have a wonderful weekend! Monday will bring Giveaway #3 ….. and other things, too. See you then.
