The First Snow

Doesn’t look like much, now does it? And yet, because it was the season’s first, we ended up going straight to my sister’s wedding reception on Saturday. Our journey took 2 1/2 hours, and we were nowhere close to getting off of the expressway when the ceremony started. It was quite stressful, watching the GPS calculate (and re-calculate) our arrival time. For the first hour, I totally believed we would somehow be able to pull it off. Then, as the time of arrival approached and then passed the start of the service, we sadly went to Plan B. I haven’t gone to “just the reception” in a long, long time. Like back in my singleton days. Thankfully, the reception was far superior to the commute, and everything ended up fine. The room (at a downtown Chicago hotel – fun to arrive at during the holiday shopping rush) was beautiful, the food and drinks were excellent (complete with martini bar, so I could indulge my new pomegranate martini fixation, which I realize in no way shape or form resembles a real martini) and seeing family and friends was so nice. K’s dress was lovely – it would have been nice to see her in it at the church, but that was out of our hands. The drive home took about 35 minutes.

Sunday was spent just kind of hanging out. It was one of those quiet, winter, break days you need every once in a while. It rained, and most of the snow is gone at this point. But it’s December 3. There will be plenty more snow days to come …..

Have a nice Monday!

I cannot believe that tomorrow is December 1, and yet we’re slated to (possibly) get a winter storm tomorrow. Hope that it’s just a bit too warm for ice. My sister is getting married tomorrow, and I would like to get to the ceremony/reception and back safely, thank you very much. We shall see what Mother Nature has in store. On with the Five, filled with ephemera:

  1. Perhaps I should have tried a life of crime
  2. cork board + back door
  3. untitled
  4. untitled (love those business cards, you know)
  5. H i v e r

Have a wonderful weekend! Special congratulations to K + K! I’m sure your wedding will be lovely …..

And don’t forget, Maria will update her shop on Saturday with her new, winter collaboration with Lena Corwin, as well as some other holiday goodies. See you back here on Monday!

More more more to read

I’m beginning to realize where my “found” four hours each week (not watching Jon or Stephen due to the writers’ strike) are going. They’re going to blog reading. I keep coming across new ones that pique my interest, and then I have to keep up with their daily postings. It goes in cycles. For a while there I was reading a lot of wedding boards (hard to pass up pretty flowers, dresses and invitations) and now I’m back into my usual category of “things that inspire”. A wide category, to be sure, but I know it when I see it. Take for example some new favs:

  • The Modern Letter Project Oh, is this a great blog! I don’t know how they hit it out of the park each and every day, but they do. Great interviews (with Maria and Rebecca), cute product information (like the holiday card guide) and new-to-me stuff like yesterday’s feature about the Envelope Collective. Not to mention that I am loving their cute little snail in the masthead! Mark it down: new addiction = the Modern Letter Project.
  • Inspiration Boards I “met” Lori Pickert through Flickr earlier this year, when she asked me to add my ribbon board photo (pictured above) to the Inspiration Boards group. Now, I’ve learned (through Holly at Decor8) that she has a new blog. I love looking at other people’s boards. They can tell you so much about a person. And Lori’s blog is great. With fun photos and interviews, it’s worth a read. (I especially enjoyed her interview with Jennifer Causey, of Simply Photo.)

You can thank me for your “lost” time later. I think you won’t mind too much …. enjoy.

More things I want (that you may, too)

You can’t miss them: ’tis the season for gift guides. I love them, but the more I read, the longer the “Things I Want” list becomes, instead of the sensible “That would make a great gift for X” which would actually be getting me somewhere. For example, have you seen:

The grosgrain ribbon table runners from Pottery Barn. These are seriously gorgeous, and would liven up a holiday table. Free shipping, too!

The adorable felt ornaments at Hable Construction. My favorite? The blackbird, a steal at $17.

Russell + Hazel’s Holiday Audrey Paper Set. Chic paper goods. Oh, the things you could keep track of for only $20.

And finally (for today), Cursive New York has a bowl of wish tickets. Wouldn’t that be fun to display? The tickets are $10; the ceramic cup is $20.

Anything strike your fancy? If so, happy shopping!

Food, glorious food

This is quickly turning into the week about food. But I’ll start with something healthy. While we were grocery shopping this weekend, I saw the first Satsumas of the year displayed. I scooped some up, and took a picture this morning of my last one (quickly, because I wanted to eat it). They were sweet, juicy, and gorgeous. I have to go back for some more asap. You can learn more about my favorite orange at Wikipedia.

Now, on to the less healthy. Here’s another reason I’d like to live in a city. If I were living in New York, I could be getting dessert from the Dessert Truck tonight. Founded by Jerome Chang (a former Le Cirque sous pastry chef) and Chris Chen, the Dessert Truck, sells some pretty awesome sounding desserts. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday, starting at 6pm, and the price is right: $5, including tax! How smart is that? Now, would I order the Creme Brulee, or the Chocolate Bread Pudding? Who am I kidding? I would work my way through the menu. (downloads as a pdf) As it is, only 6 months or so until the ice cream man returns to the suburbs. Not the same.

See you tomorrow!

Tivo alert: The greatest Christmas show of all, A Charlie Brown Christmas, airs tonight at 8/7c on abc. Watch it for the music, watch it for Linus’ eloquent explanation of what Christmas is all about, just watch it.
