In a weekend filled with soccer games and birthday parties, I was killing some time at Border’s this weekend. I picked up the latest Mary Engelbreit Home Companion to flip through while waiting for the party to end. While I’m not the biggest fan of her personal style, I enjoy the magazine because she features such a variety of interesting artists. The new issue’s artist standouts (for me) were Kaas Glass Works, which makes lovely decoupage art, and Rosanna, Inc, which makes decorative plates. (Rosanna’s Twelve Days of Christmas plates that are featured in the magazine have sold out.) As for Kaas, I’d love to get to New York City to see their store in the West Village. Looks very charming!
I’m off to be “errand girl” this morning, but before I leave, the Friday Five, courtesy of my Flickr Addiction:

2. romantic snowy morning
3. TRIBUTE how did I miss this when in Portland?
4. In the Valley

That’s all! Hope you are inspired to make the most of your weekend – see you Monday.
Bear with me one more time (at least). My two television loves, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart, are on the cover of the new Rolling Stone! They’re also interviewed for the magazine by Maureen Dowd. You can read an excerpt at rollingstone.com, but I plan to pick up a copy of the mag as soon as I can find it.
In other Stephen news, he’s been nominated for a VH1 “Big in 2006” Breakthrough award. The show airs December 3 – wonder if the Colbert Nation will claim another win for Stephen? You can vote for Stephen right here, as many times as you like, by the way. Did VH1 learn nothing from Hungary? or the Saginaw Spirit?
Did you feel it when you woke up this morning? The “holiday season” machine has been fired up. No longer Halloween – it’s time for the onslaught of catalogs, shopping, and decorating. Oh, and gift wrapping, parties, baking ….. all while trying to keep that smile and holiday spirit! I’m such a preparer that I’ve been thinking over my gift-giving list for a couple of weeks now, matching ideas with people. (Please, do not tell me how your presents, are bought, wrapped and tagged – I’m trying to smile!) My goal is to be “creative” this year, which for me means using gift cards as a last resort rather than a plan. I’m also going to remind myself that I do love Christmas, and even a sprinkling of snow.
How are you preparing for the holidays?
Happy Halloween! No doubt, at some point today I’ll be digging into the stash of candy, looking for a little taste of the goodies. (Ah, Butterfingers – so tasty!) And yet today’s NYTimes reminds me that I could be so much healthier, and age slower, if I ate a LOT less – 30% less ideally. To illustrate, a photo shows that Canto the calorie-restricted rhesus monkey does look a lot better at age 25 than Owen, fed a typical diet, and age 26. Read the article, and see the monkeys’ photos at nytimes.com. Additionally, last week’s New York magazine covered Calorie Restriction, with author Julian Dibbell’s chronicle of a month of calorie-restriction in The Fast Supper. (He quits the diet.)
Interesting stories, but not what I wanted to read as we start the holiday season, and begin the feast that is candy, turkey, pie, eggnog …. TRICK or treat?
