Black Pearl Press

I love letterpress, and I really love Black Pearl Press. Based in Boston, Elisabeth turns out the loveliest invitations, announcements, stationery, and assorted ephemera. Her “12 Days of Christmas” card set collaboration with Happy Menocal is featured in the December Design*Sponge shop. (Which means you have to order soon – the shop changes in January – don’t procrastinate!) Pearl Papers, the companion site, has some lovely holiday tags and invitations as well as personal stationery. Quite soon, you’ll be able to look at the wedding and baby portfolios online. As soon as I make up my mind ( too many great options) I am ordering some letterpress stationery – and I am planning to visit her new studio the next time I’m in Boston. Bookmark both sites so you can check in – and prepare to be inspired!

A song of beauty

Six days to go. And as an adult, this is when Christmas fatigue sets in – I start to lose sight of the joy of the holiday, and cross over into checking-things-off-a-list mode. But not yesterday. Yesterday, I spent the day listening to “O Holy Night” as performed by The City of New Orleans on Studio 60. It was gorgeous when I first heard it on the show, and it’s even better as a free download. Get it at nbc.com, now, because goodness knows how long it will be available. It brought me to tears while listening – the good kind. I would have gladly paid $$ for the download, especially if the proceeds were to help New Orlean’s musicians. Places you can help include the Tipitina Foundation, as well as Habitat for Humanity’s Musician’s Village. Give them a look, please. But don’t forget to download the song! Happy Tuesday.

Something to think about

The end of the year …. time to think about tips for the milkman, the newspaper deliverer, the hairstylist …. you know the drill. As you work through your own list of donations and tips and gifts, the NYTimes makes a compelling argument for digging even deeper to eradicate poverty world wide. Read Peter Singer’s article to see how it could happen.

Friday Flickr Five

Ten days to go! (or zero if it’s Hanukkah tonight) We’re off to see King Tut this morning, so here’s a quick Flickr Five:

  1. eggnog on the porch
  2. without sight
  3. setting the table
  4. light.
  5. Write your mother

Have a fabulous weekend! Happy Hanukkah!

John Derian

I have been meaning to talk about my obsession with John Derian for a while …. but you know how I like to procrastinate! First, here’s a Flickr photo of the store. (I am so going when I get to NYC.) Second, check out johnderian.com and all of the options for decoupage: plates, coasters, trays, and paperweights! My current fascination is with the pencil trays – I just adore the “spouting whale” – kind of an homage to Nantucket – but really, wouldn’t “encourage good intentions” be fun, too? and how about “sailboat”? You get the picture – I like it all. Enjoy! ooh, and don’t forget the Office Christmas show at 8/7c.
